Reynaldo Zapata Herrera, affectionately known as "Chato," passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, surrounded by the loving family he helped create. He was born on January 6, 1936, in Seguin, Texas to Florindo and Elvira (Zapata) Herrera.
Reynaldo dedicated 35 years to a fulfilling career in construction. Following his time in construction, he spent 10 years working for Seguin ISD, where he contributed his talents in maintenance. After his retirement in 2002, he took care of and helped raise his grandchildren for the next 23 years, cherishing every moment and creating lasting memories with them.
Reynaldo will be remembered for his vibrant personality; he was always smiling and had a unique ability to entertain those around him. He was a true kid at heart. His lively storytelling, which often included sound effects and animated hand gestures, brought joy to many family gatherings. As a protector and provider, he exemplified unconditional love and steadfast support for his family.
Reynaldo had many hobbies and interests. He loved going on walks, picking pecans, fishing, and delighting his family with home-cooked meals. Time spent with loved ones was precious to him, whether it was enjoying a cup of coffee with friends or catching up during walks at the park.
Reynaldo was preceded in death by his parents, Elvira and Florindo Herrera; sister, Coralinda Herrera; brothers, Ruben and Raymundo Herrera; grandchildren, Joy Linda Juarez and Jonathan Ray Herrera; great grandson, Azuriah Anthony Salazar.
Reynaldo is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Ann Herrera; beloved children, Norma Gil (Ricardo), Fred Herrera (Pam), and Rudy Herrera. He is further survived by 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, and his brothers, Alfredo Herrera (Francis) and Benjamin Herrera (Maria Elena).
The family would like to give special thanks to Sarah and Amanda of the GVN Hospice team for their kind and compassionate care during Reynaldo’s final days.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Goetz Funeral Home. The Holy Rosary will be recited that evening at 7:00 PM. The Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow at San Geronimo Cemetery.
