Irene Kornegay

Irene Kornegay, a longtime resident of Seguin, TX, passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at the age of 99 in her home. She was born in Austin, TX on September 27, 1925 to Paul and Milda (Wissemann) Brandenburg.

She worked for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, where she began as a telephone operator and soon worked her way up to a supervisory role. While working at the telephone company she met the love of her life, Duane Kornegay, and they were married on January 31, 1964 at the Highland Terrace Methodist Church in San Antonio, TX. She retired after 40 years and spent many years volunteering at various hospitals in San Antonio and Seguin. She and Duane were members of the First Baptist Church in Seguin, where they enjoyed their many friends, and loved spending time at their farm.

Irene is preceded in death by Duane, her parents, her sister Alice Turner, and her brothers William Brandenburg and Howard Brandenburg. She is survived by her dear friend and neighbor Joyce Trainer, her nieces Melanie Millsap and Sheila Schuetz, her nephews Barry Brandenburg, Scott Brandenburg, and Gordon Brandenburg, many great nieces and nephews, her step-granddaughter Charlene Kornegay, and her step-great grandson Elijah Kornegay.

Irene’s family would like to thank Dr. Dean Zincone for her many years of wonderful care, her Visiting Angels JoEtta Wilson, Charlene Pride, Maria Gonzales, Patricia Brown, and Rachael Walker for loving her and taking such good care of her at home, and her amazing team from New Beginnings Hospice for making her comfortable at home during these last months. Irene is happily reunited with her loved ones once again.

Visitation will be on Monday, August 25, 2025 at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Seguin, TX. Donations may be made to the First Baptist Church in Seguin or the charity of your choice.
