Elsie Bormann Bartoskewitz Wood of Seguin, passed away July 30, 2018 at the age of 100. She was born to Harry and Emma Timmermann Bormann on June 9, 1918 in the Geronimo community. Elsie was baptized, confirmed and then later married to Ferdinand Bartoskewitz at Freidens United Church in Geronimo on October 7, 1936. Ferdinand passed away in 1973.
Elsie played piano and organ as well as taught Sunday school at Friedens United Church and at school gatherings. She was very active in the Navarro PTA where she attended school as well. Elsie and friend Anita Boenig started the first cafeteria at Navarro. Moving into an old schoolhouse, the ladies used an old stove and each student brought a plate, glass, fork, spoon, knife and dessert dish to start the lunchroom. Elsie was active with the Fair Association, T.B. Association, Hospital Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and helped organize AARP in Seguin. She received the Business Women of Year award. She worked at JC Penny store, owned Mode O’Day store and established Fairyland Fashions children’s store in Oak Park Mall for many years. She operated Elsie’s Tours for 28 years and traveled many miles by car, plane, bus and cruises throughout the United States and Europe. Through her travels she met Gerald Gene Wood who she later married on November 11, 1980. One of her favorite things to do was to take her darling grandchildren on these trips. She was grateful to have made many beloved friends along the way. Elsie will be greatly missed.
She is preceded in death by her first husband, Ferdinand Bartoskewitz; two infant sons, Jerndell and Bobby; daughters, five-year-old Molly Ann and Barbara Harborth; and her second husband, Gerald Gene Wood.
She is survived by her children, Wilfred and Betty Bartoskewitz, Linda and Ronnie Foremann, son-in-law Paul Harborth, step-son, Carl Wood and wife Betty Frances, nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren and 5 step grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Sunday, August 5, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at Friedens United Church of Christ. Service will follow at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be at Lone Oak Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Texas Agriculture Education Heritage Center, Lone Oak Cemetery Association or to Friedens United Church of Christ in Geronimo.
